“4 steps to better portraits”

Starts October 1st 2025

This online workshop is spread over 4 weeks.

The videos will be accessible at any time wherever you are in the world

It will focus on drawing portraits in charcoal, but the approach is applicable to any medium.

Tools and materials required::

Charcoal, Paper, Kneaded rubber and the thing between your ears.

This is how the workshop is structured

Step 1. (week 1.) “Reset”

Whether you make portraits or not you will have a perception of what a portrait should be and how it should be produced. This has to be removed and reset.

Videos + questionnaire (no drawing!)

Step 2.  (week 2.) “Being fearless”

The fear of getting it wrong, the fear of not meeting a standard, the fear of someone judging what you do can have a debilitating effect on your work. How to become fearless.

Videos and examples

Step 3. (week 3.) “Seeing”

Not only do you need to see, you must be able to recognise what’s important and the relationships between these elements. Learn to see with accuracy.

Step 4. (week 4.)Response
