How to capture the life force in a portrait – Part 1.

Event Date:

June 27, 2022

Event Time:

8:00 pm

The primary requirement of any portrait is “To capture the life force of the subject”

It is, and should be, the most important thing.

However, people get hung up on likeness and execution.

The result is that they struggle, because they focus on the wrong things.

They think that knowledge is the answer. It becomes all about anatomy, methods and measurement.

They think that skill is the answer. They practice and practice and their only measurement of success  is how photographic the result is.

But the truth is that if you don’t capture what’s behind the eyes of the subject and not just the colour, you have failed. No amount of anatomical accuracy or painstaking execution will fix what’s missing, THE LIFE FORCE!

In this workshop:

  1. I’ll talk about connecting with the subject and how that affects the way you make their portrait.
  2. I’ll show you my simple technique to help you learn to focus on what’s important and we’ll explore the concept of “responsive” drawing.
